ANGIES LIST - The problems with Angie's List
Angie's list is in limited markets.
Angie's list charges the consumer to receive recommendations from other consumers for what are good retailers for services. Consumers are paying for the service (approximately $60 per year). The service provider can't be rated unless they have been rated by a paying consumer.
The problem is I personally know of a retailer who was called by someone in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and told for $1500 they (the consumer) would give him an excellent rating. He paid, and they wrote a glowing review. Then Angie's list contacted him and said for $150 per month he could be listed at the top of the search list. I believe Angie's list sells the top 10 spots to retailers with good reviews. Their paying consumers don't realize that the retailers can pay to get a better listing. As consumers find this out it could turn bad for Angis's list
This means Angie's list could be a con. Their own people could be contacting retailers, because the retailers can become a revenue stream for angie's list. There are now websites for consumers to report how they feel they were ripped off by angie's list and several websites that show what a bad idea Angie's list is.
